Artist Statement
As a young man I feel affected by the expectations that society places on me. I don't see myself represented in the mainstream media. Through various printmaking processes I seek to develop representations that reflect myself. I create images that reflect my exploration and questioning of gender identity.
I explore androcentric thinking as it relates to male bodies and begins to criticize this way of thinking. These images reference male bodies found in advertising, and popular media, while being vastly different from these sleek and stylized images. In combining the the male body with decorative patterning and symbols I hope to place masculinity in different context. The patterns and symbols used borrow from varying sources, that are traditionally associated with femininity. I reference wallpaper, textile design, and nature, which are all traditional associated with women. In placing masculinity into this new context I am questioning strict gender roles and the idea gender binary.
